Agreed, although I suppose it depends on how you define "observation." If your field of view happens to take in something, but you are not focused on it, does that count as observation of said object?

Yes, there was much speculation over here last night as well... although with the now-classic pattern of "Thing X will happen to unknown person Y!" "Who?" (*mumble mumble mumble* *swirly passage of time* Dr. Who, that's who.) is ever a source of bemusement.
That episode was chock full of timey wimey goodness.
Even if the Giant Reset Button is about to be pushed, I would guess from the reaction of the villagers in Ep.1 that Earth has some experience of alien visitors.
