Ah, well, I can contribute the entirely genuine brisingamen who could be briefly glimpsed during the broadcast from the Last Night of the Proms on Saturday, during Land of Hope and Glory. (Yes, I did get PK to tape the entire thing to see if I could spot myself.) My neighbour on my left side could be seen a number of times (though we could mercifully not hear her humming out of tune), but I made it onto the screen, clearly, only once, and I could only find myself because I could see Doug Faunt, he being somewhat taller than me.
I met Doug Faunt during the Worldcon. We chatted about ships. He did mention that he went to the Proms and I wondered if I should ask if he knew you, but I thought, what are the odds?
Actually, I know Doug quite well. He drove me around a lot during the West Coast part of my TAFF trip and was one of my hosts in the Bay Area. I've stayed at his place a couple of times and he's visited here a couple of times. By one of those weird things that happen, one of his radio ham acquaintances lives just outside Folkestone too. In fact, from where I'm sitting, I can see the roof of the guy's house, and all the aerials.
I took Doug to the Proms last year -- his first visit, though he often listens to them via the internet. Very memorable for all the wrong reasons. It was 11th September. This year was more fun.
Doug Faunt is one of those people who is Always There Wherever you Go. Like Jon Singer used to be, but isn't any more unfortunately. I remember as far back as 88 when Chris and I were on our US TAFF trip, he popped up everywhere we went ( Well, OK, San Fran, NY and N'Orleans. As did Alan Bostick, who ws also in Seattle I think. They get around, these US fen.)
Actually, I've spent a lot of time with Jon Singer on my last two trips to the States. PK saw him last year when he was over in New York on business, and I was deeply, deeply envious (I wasn't on that trip, and hadn't seen Jon since 1998). You may imagine my immense pleasure, when I flew in from Chicago later in the year, and found Jon standing at the gate at La Guardia, along with PNH, waiting for me. (You may also imagine the shine being taken off this when I discovered that this was partly because TNH was stuck in hospital.)
He also came in to NYC this year, overnight, to see us when we passed through. Way cool, I thought. Amazing man; I love him dearly. I also own two of his wonderful pots, which sit on the coffee table.
